Abstract
1,167,905. Electric induction furnaces. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 Oct., 1967 [19 Oct., 1966], No. 46690/66. Heading H5H. A refractory vessel such as a crucible or ladle 51 has a U-shaped duct 65 having its opposite ends communicating with the inside of the crucible respectively at two spaced-apart regions, such that molten metal in the duct and body portion forms a closed electrically conductive turn, and is characterized by the upright annular magnetic core 81 having a vertical portion 91 displaceable to provide a gap in the annulus through which a part of the duct 65 can pass into the annulus, the gap being reclosable so that the duct threads the core 81 which has a winding 83 for inductively heating the metal in the duct when energized. Portion 91 is held stationary while the rest of core 81 moves away therefrom on a trolley 85 on rails 89. The duct 65 is formed from three separate mitred parts 67, 69, 71. The vessel is discharged from its base or has a pouring spout.
