A rotating disc having a series of apertures is located in the focal plane of the condenser lens system or in the focal plane of the eyepiece. A light intensity which is higher than that which the eye can receive under steady conditions of illumination is used to increase the contrast of the observed image, and the frequency of interruption is at or.above the persistence of vision.
