A tapering discharge unit at the base of a container 24 for particulate material comprises a conduit 30 having an outlet portion 32 closed by a butterfly valve 34 and tapering in an outward direction to the nozzle 50. A pipe 46, provided with a valve 52, connects the upper part of the container 24 with an annular Venturi chamber 48 surrounding the nozzle 50. The sloping base 36 of the container 24 is provided with a permeable sheet 38 for fluidizing gas from an inlet pipe 40. The container is fed with material from a hopper 10 via an intermediate chamber 16 and air-lock valves, an equalization pipe with a valve 51 being provided between the container 24 and the chamber 16.
