Abstract

1,167,020. Rolling. WILHELM HEGENSCHEIDT K.G. 2 Dec., 1966 [4 Dec., 1965], No. 54029/66. Heading B3M. In a method of smoothing a planar workpiece, such as a brake disc, smoothing rolls are applied to opposite planar surfaces of the workpiece, the rolls being similarly inclined relative to their respective surfaces and being fed radially of the workpiece. The rolls 3, 3<SP>1</SP> are restrained by bars 5, 5<SP>1</SP>, and, together with backing rolls 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, are supported on the cross slide 2 of a lathe which rotates the disc 1. The four rolls are inclined (Fig. 3, in plan) relative to the disc and are mounted in arms 6 and 7 which are pivoted at 8. An hydraulic piston and cylinder assembly 11 acts between the free ends of the arms to urge the rolls 3, 3<SP>1</SP> into contact with the disc. A spindle 18 is rotated to feed the cross slide, and hence the rolls, relative to the disc.
