Abstract
1306474 Roller burnishing; peening MADISON INDUSTRIES Inc 19 April 1971 [23 March 1970] 24007/71 Headings B3M and B3H A roller burnishing tool 10 incorporates a number of rollers 14 which act on the surface of a workpiece with a combined burnishing and peening action. The rollers are mounted in a cage 16 and act against the outer cylindrical surface of a workpiece while being supported by the inner surface of a mandrel 12. The mandrel has grooves 24, 26, 28 (Fig. 2) in its surface separated by lands 25, 27. The formation of the grooves and the number of rollers are arranged so that at least three rollers contact a land at any time (i.e. they are performing a burnishing action on the workpiece). The tool may be rotatably mounted in a tool by a shank 22, or a rotating workpiece may be inserted between the rollers. A similar tool (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) for acting on the interior of a cylindrical surface employs a number of rollers arranged about a central grooved, mandrel. The rollers may be skewed relative to the tool axis.
