MOODY OF THE UE'I TED STATES'NAVY MEANS FOR AND METHOD OF BESTQRING WORN PACKING LANDS Application filed July 22,
1931. Serial No. 552,409.
(GRANTED UNDER THE ACT or MARCH 3,1 1883; As AMENDED APRIL 30, 1928; 370 G. 757) My invention relates broadly to a packing tool and more particularly to a tool for repairing the lands of dummy and labyrinth packing, and its method of use.
An object of the invention is to provide a tool for increasing the radial dimensions oflands of dummy and labyrinth packings. Another object isto provide a tool having interchangeable rollers: whereby worn packing lands may be restored to their original height by a rolling process. I
Vith the above and other objects in. view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described more fully hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the assembled tool;
Figure 2 is an end view thereof;
Figures 3 to 7 show various designs of rollers used in the process practised by my invention; and
Figures 8 to show various steps in the practice thereof;
7 Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 and 2 indicate respective sections of a packing tool handle that are held in adjustable relationship with each other by screw-threaded bolts 3 or other suitable adjustable fastening elements, and between which shim material may be inserted to space them apart.' Should it be desired to separate the sections a distance greater than is permissible with shims, it may be accomplished by stud-bolts 4 that pass through section 1 and abut against the other section. By turning bolts 4 inwardly and easing-off bolts 8, the handle sections may be separated the desired distance. Although the sections are separated by either shims or by the bolts,
they are always maintained parallel to each other. Recesses, indicated by dotted lines in'Figure 1 as at 5, are provided in the cor responding ends of the sections to receive the shanks of rollers 6, shown 1n Figures 3 to 7 Each of the rollers is constructed with a circumferential groove 7 in its shank that registers with'a corresponding groove 8 in the recess formed in each of the handle sections, whereby it is held free to rotate but is prevented from becoming disengaged from the recess by a pin 9passing transversely through the handle and-engaging in the aligned grooves. It is desirable that the headsorx'vorking ends of the rollers be of 6 different shapes and sizes to accommodate the various uses to which they may be put in drawing-out a worn land, several such shapes and sizes being illustrated in the drawing, Should the land of the packing being re-drawn have one straight side, and a-curved side, a cylindrical roll, is used against the former, and one of a different .de-
sign is used against the latter. Shouldthe 1 land, however, have a uniform'cross-section, identical rolls are used on both sides.
The lands of labyrinth or dummypacking usually are composed of a comparatively softfmetal that will gradually wear away by use and leave a clearance between the land and the opposed surface of sufiicient size to materially-impair the efficiency of the pack-- ing. To restore a packing, the lands of which have become worn, has been a long, laborious and expensive task, but by the use ofmyiinvention thelands may be quickly and easily restored to their original height, and with a minimum danger of accidental damage to the land,
My invention accomplishes its purpose by a a rolling or burnishing method and may be performed either manually orfimechanically. A p'airof rollers, selected for the. particular task from a general stock of assorted size and shape, amongothers being those'shown in the drawing, are inserted in the handle gasbeforegexplained, the -sections of which are spaced apart so that the tool may be fitted overthe land to here-drawn, as may be seen in Figures 8 to 10 wherein the lan is represented by 10. If, as before stated,
the landhas-one straight side," the rollers shown in Figure 3 is used for that side, and the rollers shown in the remaining Figures 4 "to 7, are used in. turnfor the. outer side. By 100 rolling the tool over the land, the enlarged head of the roller displaces a portion of the metal of the land, as illustrated in Figure 8. When a proper amount of metal has thus been displaced, a roller with a larger head is substituted for the one previously used and the operation repeated until the land has the appearance of that illustrated in Figure 9. The rolling operation is continued with rollers having in turn larger heads until the land is drawn out to the desired length, after which the roller shown in Figure 7 is substituted and the contour of the land further smoothed out as shown in Figure 10.
It will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawing comprehend only the generaland'preferred embodiment of my invention and that various changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Within the scope of the appended claims .and'without sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States for governmental purposes without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
liming described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A hand tool for restoring packing lands including in combination a handle composed of separable sections adjustably connected and maintained in parallelism, means for adjusting the sections, a longitudinally extending recess in one end of each of the sec tions, rollers mounted in the recesses and in longitudinal alignment with the handle sections, and means rotatably securing the rollers therein.
2. A hand tool for restoring lands of worn labyrinth packing including a pair of compressing rollers, a hand grip for each of the rollers, and means securing the rollers in the V handgrlps, said hand grips being adjustable in parallelism and connected to form a unitary tool. I
3. A hand tool for restoring worn packinglands including a. handle composed of adjustable-sections, eachsection being provided with a longitudinal recess, rollers revolubly supported in the recesses in alignment withthe handle sections joined in parallel- :therein.
ism, and means for securing the rollers 4. A' hand tool for restoring worn packing lands including a handle composed of adjustable parallel sections, each section being provided with a longitudinal recess, rollers revolubly supported atone end only in the Y recesses whereby a piece of work may be admitted between the rollers at their free ends,
and means for securing the rollers in the recesses, said rollers having their axes of rotation in longitudinal alignment with the reingprovided with a recess at one end thereof,
rollers mounted in the recesses and having their axes'of rotation in longitudinal alignment with the sections and in parallelism with each other, and means for securing the rollers therein;
6. A method of re-drawing tapered packing lands consisting of subjecting a small area of the lands to a pressure between rollers, extending the area of rolling progressively towards the thinnest portion of the land increasing the working areas of the rollers as the rolling process progresses, and finally smoothing the whole area of the land. '7. A method of increasing the height of worn taperedpacking lands consisting in displacing by pressure a small area of the metal at the thickest portion of the land, smoothing out the displaced metal by rollers having increased working areas, continuing the displacing and smoothing operationsalternately and progressively towards the thinnest portion of the land, and finally smoothing the whole area of the land.
