1370680 Transverse rolling VYZKUMNY USTAV TVARECICH STROJU A TECHNOLOGIE TVARENI 23 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 59874/71 Heading B3M A cylindrical workpiece is rolled in two stages between three rolls 1, 2 and 3 provided with transverse wedge rolling tools on their surfaces, each roll having two sections 1a, 1b &c., mounted on a common shaft 4. The rolling tools may be separate tools carried on the rolls, or they may be formed integrally with the roll surface. In one embodiment (Figs. 1 and 3), three rolls define a central pass for a workpiece 5. The sections 1a, 2a and 3a of the rolls are freely rotatable on the shafts 4, whereas the sections 1b, 2b and 3b are keyed to the shafts. Initially, the portion of the workpiece between the sections 1a, 2a and 3a is rolled by rotation of these sections (Fig. 5b), while the other sections are maintained stationary. Then the other sections 1b, 2b and 3b are rotated to roll the remainder of the workpiece (Fig. 5c), a knife blade 11 separating the finished workpiece from a length of stock. In alternative forms, both sections of each roll may have a knife-blade (Fig. 7, not shown). In this case the sections b of the rolls may, in the Fig. 7 embodiment, roll the product before the section a. Each roll may have three sections, (Fig. 8, not shown), the outer sections being freely rotatable on the shaft, and the central section keyed to it. The outer sections may be connected by a torsion bar passing through a central bore in the shaft.
