Abstract

1,093,343. Welding by pressure. G. A. BLACK and E. H. HANDS. July 25, 1966 [Aug. 27, 1965; Nov. 2, 1965], Nos. 37009/65 and 46453/65. Heading B3R. A method of friction welding comprises rotating one workpieee relatively to another during a first period in which the pieces are pressed together, stopping the rotation and continuing to press the articles together for a second period, the pressure in at least the first of said periods being increased steadily throughout the period. Preferably the pressure increases steadily in both periods and the rate of increase of pressure may be the same or different in the two periods or may vary uniformly or incrementally in each period as illustrated in Figs. 3 to 8 (not shown). Pressure is applied to a movable work-holder by a fluid pressure cylinder or cylinders and two fluid pressure circuits are described (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) which provide means for adjustably increasing the pressure in the two periods.
