Labels and placards are printed in a cylinder machine in which an impression roller 7 is manually moved over a copy sheet lying face downwardly on an inked printing surface. The latter comprises a steel plate 2 bearing reference squares 3 and edged with toothed racks 4, 5 and 6. Type blocks bearing characters, pictures &c. are mounted on the plate 2 by character bars such as 16 and 21 which span the plate and are located at each end either directly in a notch or switches of the racks 4, 5 and 6 or in numbers such as 23 intermediate the bar end and a rack. The bars are switched such that suitably shaped blocks, see 15, Fig. 2, may straddle the associated bar and be clamped laterally by spring loaded notch engaging members 19. The bar 21 is pivotally mounted at one end in a member 22 which engages rack teeth and at the other end in a notch of an arcuately shaped rack 24 on the member 23. The clamping members 19 may be replaced by inverted U-shaped magnets. Alternatively magnets may be built-in the lower surfaces of the blocks. In this case the bars such as 16 may be dispensed with. In a further modification the bar 16 comprises two half-width bars each being pivoted to a member such as 22 in engagement with a rack 4, 5 or 6.
