This invention relates to adjustable printers chases and has for its primary object the provision of such a device which will permit the shifting of the type composition without removing the device from the press.
One of the primary objects of this invention is the provision of an adjustable printers chase which is provided with a main frame, a type-holding chase within said framev and novel means for holding the chase and frame in the proper working relation.
An even further object Vof the present invention is to provide novel combined holding and supporting means for the adjustable chase both of which means are simultaneously moved to the chase releasing position. p

Figure 1 is a face plan view of an adjustable printers chase made in accordance with this invention, parts being broken away to illustrate construction details.

It is well known in the printers trade that the shifting of type composition within a chase of the ordinary type requires that the chase be removed from the press and the type furniture shifted so that the composition of type may be shifted to be impressed upon the proper portion of the press bed. It is desirable in this art to quickly shift the type composition and it is with this broad object in mind as well as the objects above set forth that the present invention has been shown in the preferred embodiment illustrated in the drawing wherein similar reference characters refer` to like parts throughout the `several views.
lfVith specific reference at this time to the construction of the preferred form, the numeral 8 indicates a frame similar to the ordi nary printers chase. This frame 8 is provided with a groove 10 entirely around its inner edge as shown in Fig. 1. 'A type-holding chase 12 is supported within frame 8 through the intermediacy of a plurality of pins 14 which are preferably three (3) in number, two being on one side of the chase 12 and the third being on the opposite side therefrom and disposed substantially intermediate the two pins in the rst mentioned side. This disposition of pins 14 provides athree point suspension for chase 12 and allows quick insertion and removal of the chase 12"'within the frame 8. As shown in the various views these pins 14 rest in groove 10 and movement from side to side in the plane of frame 8 is permitted when the later described holding means is moved to the released position. lVhen chase 12 has been located in the proper position within frame 8 the same may be held against side to side movement by theengagingdevices 16 pivotally supported as at 18 by chase 8.
Teeth 20 formed at the outer edge of a projecting portion of the engaging device 16, engage similarly formed teeth of rack 22 supported by frame 8. As will be noticed by referring to Figl, each of the four sides of frame 8 is provided with a rack 22 and since groove 10 is formed entirely around the inner edge of frame 8, it is obvious that a chase may be supported by Vframe 8 for movement in directionsopposite to the directions of move ment allowed chase 12 now shown. The pin 14 carried by chase 12 for engagement with groove 10 of frame 8 opposite from the two pins 14 is of special construction and should be. shouldered as shown in Fig. 5 to engage a fiat spring 24 projecting outwardly from the end of a slot 26 formed in chase 12. This spring 24 normally and yieldably presses against pin 14 to hold the same in groove 10 and across pin 28 extending upwardly from'pinV 14 is rigidly secured to engaging device 16, thus when spring 24 is holding pin 14 in engagement with groove 10, it is also holding teeth in engagement with the teeth formed on the rack 22. This spring seats pin 14 and forces the chase 12 snugly against the inner side of frame 8 opposite therefrom. It is to be noticed that the space be tween frame 8 and chase 12 allows a tipping upwardly for removal when pin 14 and the engaging device 16 has been moved inwardly' against spring 24 so that both pin and teeth 14 and 20 respectively, are out of engagement. When this action takes place engaging device 16 is pivoted about its pivotal point 18. A similar spring 24 carried within cavity 26 in the side of chase 12 opposite from the shoulder pin 14 bears against pin 30 carried by engaging device 16. This spring 24 merely acts to hold the teeth 20 of engaging device 16 in place against the teeth of rack 22.
To permit the use of a metal type pick to assist in moving engaging devices 16 from the holding position, both members 16 are provided with openings 32 therethrough adjacent their free ends respectively. These Openings 32 over-lie small cavities 34 formed in chase 12 beneath and eccentrically to holes 32.4 As shown in Fig. 6,. this offset relation between holes 32 and cavity 34 permits a leverage to be set up when the pick or similar. instrument is inserted through hole 32 infn. cavity 34 and moved inwardly. It will be noticed that this action will quickly move teeth 20 out of engagement with rack 22 and movement to either side may be imparted to chase l2 while the frame is held in the press. It is desirable to provide indicia 36 along the face of frame 8 in order that the chase 12 may be moved any predetermined distance without having to measure such movement through the use of a separate scale.
One end of chase 12 is provided with shouldered plungers 37 which are mounted in and adapted to extend beyond holes 38 formed in said chase to bear against the inner wall of frame 8. Spring 39 is positioned on 37 and abuts against shoulder 40 to force the plunger outwardly. To limit the outward movement of 37, a nut 41 is placed on the inner end thereof which is adapted to abut against shoulder 42.
lThe operation of the device has been made clear through the detailed specification. What is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1.. A device of the character described comprising a rigid frame, a non-adjustable chase supported for slidable movement by said frame, resilient means whereby one surface of said chase is maintained against said frame, and means for holding the chase in any predetermtined position along the path of moveman 2. device of the character described comprising a. frame, a non-adjustable chase supported by the frame, elements -interconnecting the frame and chase to permit relative adjustment and a releasing device for the inner connecting elements, operable to permit re-V moval of the chase from the frame. n
3. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a chase supported by the frame elements interconnectlng the rame and chase to permit relative adjustmentvand means for holding said chase in the adjusted position, a part of the inter-connecting elements bein" movable to the in-operative position by the holding means, when said iolding means is moved to the releasing position.
4. A device of the character described comprisin a frame, a non-adjustable chase ad- ]ustab y supported by the frame, a series of engageable members rigid with the frame and an engaging device mounted on each of two opposite sides respectively of said chase for movement into and out of engagement with the engageable members and yieldable means for holding the engaging device against said engageable members.
5. A device ofthe character described comprising a frame, a chase adj ustably supported y the frame, a series of teeth rigid with the frame, an engaging device having notches formed therein mounted on said chase for movement into and out of engagement with the teeth carried by the frame, yieldable means for holding the teeth in engagement with said notches when frameand chase are in the operative position, and an inter-connecting element slidably joining said frame and chase, movable vwith said engaging device when the same is moved to the disengaged position.
6. A device of the character described comprising a frame; a nonadjustable chase adjustably supported by the frame and means for holdin said chase in the adjusted position, inclu ing a series of engageable members carried by the frame; and a manually operable engaging device positioned at cach end of said chase respectively, each of said. devices having yieldablc means for holding the same in engagement with the engageable members carried by the chase.
