Patented Aug. 25, 1925.
UNITED STATES WALLACE S. WARNOCK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PRINTING APPARATUS.
Application led Novembergl, 1923.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE S. l/VARNooK, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new` and useful Improvement in Printing Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to printing apparatus and has for its general object the provision of an improved bed or foundation, and also an improved inter-relation thereof with printing element holders that may be positioned thereupon.
The printing bed of my invention, in accordance with one of the characteristics thereof, is formed with element receiving holes or recesses and also with channels eX- tending along the said holes from the working surface of the bed, that surface upon which the printing elements are disposed. rlhe rinting element holders are formed with aterallj7 projecting lugs, these holders being receivable in the holes or recesses and the lugs being receivable in the channels. The holders are also adapted to turn in the holes or recesses after being fully received therein to bring the lugs out of alignment with the channels to prevent the accidental displacement of the holders.
According to another characteristic of the invention the printing bed is formed in sections each having holding formations that interlit with the holding formations upon the other to maintain the sections in assembly to constitute the complete bed. In such a construction beds of selected size may be incorporated in printing forms to suit the nature of the work and the size of the press.
The invention will be more fully explained in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 is a plan view illustrating a bed formed in three sections, two of these sections being equally square and the third oblong with the length thereof twice the lateral dimension of each square section, a printing plate being illustrated in position upon the bed and held thereon by means of printing plate holders that are inserted in the recesses formed in the bed; Fig. 2 is a side view of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on a larger scale, on line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4t illustrates a portion of one section of the bed with the printing plate holder assembled therewith.
Serial N0. 672,153.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The printing bed illustrated is inclusive of two equally dimensioned square blocks 1 and 2 and a long` block having its width equaling the lateral dimension of one of the square blocks and its length twice such dimension. Each side of each block is formed with a number of mortises or female formations 4; and tenons or male formations 5. These formations upon each block intert with the complemental formations of adjacent blocks whereby the blocks may be assembled in any suitable relation to define a bed of any suitable size or shape. These interfitting formations upon the various blocks are so related that the holes or recesses 6 formed in the bed are maintained in selected alignment or pre-determined relative arrangement. The bed is also formed with channels 7, there being one channel at each hole and laterally extending such hole. These channels extend from the working face of the bed to the under side thereof and this under side is spaced apart from the bed of the press in any suitable way as by means of pins 8 cast upon the bottoms of the bed out o-f the same piece of metal therewith. The printing plate holders are of any suitable construction. The holders illustrated include jaws 9 connected with mechanism that is disposed within hollow carriers l0, this mechanism being adapted to cause the jaws to advance toward or recede from the printing plate or other printing element 11. Each printing plate holder is provided with a lug 12 extending laterally therefrom and so placed that it will pass through the corresponding channel 7 when the plate holder has been fully placed within the corresponding hole 6, the jaw 9 of said plate holder engaging the working face of the bed to prevent the holder from dropping through the bed. Vhen the holder has been thus inserted it is turned to bring its lug 12 out of register with the corresponding channel 7 so that the holder may not be accidentally withdrawn. When the holder is to be withdrawn it is turned to its initial position with its lug 12 in alignment with the corresponding channel.
Features not herein claimed form the subject matter of a divisional application Serial No. 9519, filed February 16, 1925.
It is obvious that changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invent-ion.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following 1. A printing bed formed with printing element holder receiving holes and having channels extending along said holes from the working surface of the bed.
2. A printing bed formed with printing element holder receiving holes and having channels extending along said holes from the working surface of the bed, the space for receiving the printing element holder being widened at the inner ends of the holes at which the channels terminate to communi* cate With the widened space.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 24th day of October A. D., 1920.
