TYPE-CARRIER AND MRKING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern 5 Be it known that we, FRED A. PUTNAM and CHARLES F. ROBBINS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Melrose, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, and Abington, countyof Plymouth, State of Massachusetts, respectively, have invented an Improvement in Type-Carriers for Marking-Machines, of which the following, description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to marking and printing machines of that type which in- Charles. F. Robbins, Se. No. 848,679 filed,
July=2., 1914, and in order to illustrate this invention it has been shown as it might be applied to-a marking machine of this character. It is to be understood, however, that
the invention'isnot'limitedto its'use in connection with a marking machine of that particular type, but is capable of general use wherever a type carrier is necessary for supporting aplurality of type members.
- The object of the invention. is to provide a novel type carrier on which interchangeable type members. can be placed and-firmly held in position and which is constructed so thrt the type members can be readily removed and replaced by others whenever a change of type is desired.
In order to give a proper understanding of the invention aselected embodiment thereof is illustrated herein which will now be described.
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a printing head of a marking machine such as described in said co-pending application and having the herein-described improvements embodied therein; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on the line mm, Fig. 1, showing the manner of sustaining-the type holderin the type carrier Fig. 3 is a fragmentary'bottom plan view of Fig. 1 with parts broken out;
therein, which Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 16, 1915.. Application. filed July 2, 1914. Serial No. 8485680.
type-bearing projections 11, each having Iormed on its end a type'character 12,.these type members being capable of adjustment by means of a centering device 13, all as described in said application.
In some types of marking machines it is desirable to provide for making a printed impression on two diiferent lines simultaneously. The printed impression on one line can be made by the type members 4 and that on the other line by type characters carried by a type plate. The type plate herein shown is one which is so constructed that the type thereon can be set closely adjacent to those type projections 11 of the type members 4 that are in printing position-so that the two lines of the printed impression will be made close together.
The print-ing head 1 has associated theree with-a type carrier herein illustrated as constituted by two side pieces 19 that are situated at opposite ends of the printing head and are movably' sustained thereby.
This type carrier sustains a type holder which is preferably removably mounted e holder in turncarries a plurality of interchangeable type members. The type holder is'provided with retaining means to lock the type-members on the type holder, and this retaining means is in turn locked so-long as the type-holder is sustained in the typecarrier. The type holder'herein illustrated comprises two ends or heads '3 and' 5 which are connected by a type-carrying bar 6 on which the individual type members 18 are removably mounted' These type members 'are each provided with the central groove or notch 7 of a size to fit the type-carrying bar 6 and each memberv can be applied to'or removed from-the bar. For holding the type mem-v bers on the typercarrying bar 6 a retaining member 7 is employedwhich is-herein illus- 5 members of a printing head or is trated as pivoted to the type bar as at 8, the other end thereof entering a notch 9 formed in the head 5. When the retaining member-7 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, it engages the sides of the type members 18 and prevents them from being withdrawn from the bar 6. In order to remove the type members the retaining member is swung up into the dotted line position Fig. 4, after which anyone of the type members can be removed from the ty e bar or new type members can be replaced thereon.
As stated above, the type holder is removably sustained in the two sides 19 of the type carrier and the manner of accomplishing this is such that when the type holder is in the type carrier the retaining member 7 will be locked in its operative position. While 'any suitable construction capable of operating in this way may be employed, a simple construction is shown in thedrawings which has'been found to be eminently practicable. The two sides '19 of the type carrier are provided with grooves 14 in which the heads 3 and 5 are slidably received, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, this construction providing means whereby the type holder can be readily withdrawn from or inserted into the type carrier. It will be noted from Figs. 2 .and 3 that the end 15 of the retaining'member 7 which occupies the groove 9 is situated in the groove 14 of the type carrier when the type holder is in operative position, and by this means the retaining member is locked in its operative at one end,
position so long as the type holder is in the,
type carrier.
The construction herein illustrated is such that when the type holder is properly placed will abut against those type-bearing projections 11 of the type members 4 that are in printing position, as clearly seen in Fig. 1. This brlngs the type members 18' closely adj acent to the type 12 from which the impression is made.
. For holding the type. holder in= this position a spring catch 22 is provided ineach of the side pieces 19 of the type carrier, said catches being adapted to engage in recesses 23 formed in the heads 3 and 5. These catches are sulficient to hold the type holder 'in its operative position while permitting the type holder to be readily plying a little pressure thereto.
116 the invention has been described,
as itwould be applied to a markin machine of a particular type, yet it will be 'observed that the invention is of such a char-' be used in connection with machlnes, or may be emactor that it can other -markingil ployed genera y to hold individual type members in a type carrier whether the type carrier is used in connection with the type used b side members,
ed on said bar,
in the type carrier the retaining member 7 tained in said removed by apitself. It is, therefore, intended to cover this form of type carrier and holder, regardless of the particular use to which it is put.
