Abstract

1,164,434. Coated metals. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 7 Feb., 1967 [24 Feb., 1966; 7 April, 1966], Nos. 8223/66 and 15578/66. Heading B2K. [Also in Divisions C3 and C4] Metals to be subjected to heat treatment, particularly iron or steel, are coated with a composition comprising aluminium metal powder and ZnO and/or MgO, or a compound forming ZnO or MgO on heating, in a liquid vehicle, and the coating is heated to form a spinel. The vehicle may be water, alcohol, ipropanol or industrial spirit, and may include a suspending agent such as bentonite clay or a cellulose ether, and a binder such as an aqueous polyvinyl acetate emulsion. The aluminium particles may be protected from alkaline attack by a wax or resin coating, by a coating of alumina, by a pH buffer solution, or by the addition of a corrosion inhibitor such as thiourea, benztriazole or an imidazole. The ZnO and/or MgO may be provided by ZnCO 3 and/or MgCO 3 , and an alkali or alkaline earth' metal or magnesium fluoride flux may be included to aid spinel formation. The coating is heated to 900‹C at least, to form the spinel.
