Abstract

Pickling baths contain as inhibitors at least one aromatic or araliphatic aldehyde and at least one basic aromatic N-compound or salt thereof. Pickling acids referred to are hydrochloric and sulphuric acid. Aldehydes specified are benzaldehyde, furfuraldehyde, phenylcetaldehyde and a - naphthaldehyde. N-compounds specified are nicotine sulphate, cinchonine sulphate, aniline and quinoline. Metals which may be cleaned include iron and steel, aluminium and zinc. The inhibitors may be added direct to the acids or may be made up as concentrates in a solvent. It is stated that the inhibitors may also be used to protect aluminium or zinc acid-containers from being attacked by the acids contained therein.
