Abstract

1,163,990. Control of motors. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. 10 April, 1967 [18 April, 1966], No. 16354/67. Heading H2J. [Also in Divisions D1 and G3] An electric motor control circuit as shown in Fig. 9 is used to control the feed roll motor and winding motor 18 of a glass filament packaging machine (see heading D1J). On momentary closure the starting switch 218 relays CR1 and M are operated to close their contacts CR1, and M2 respectively thus energizing the two motors. This also energizes the holding relay M-1. When the package is fully wound yardage counter 224 opens switch 220 thus de-energizing the two motors via their relays M and CR1; relay contact CR1-CR3 is also closed to operate the motor brakes 132 and 158. As the size of the wound package increases the increasing number of windings cause the speed of the winding motor 18 to be decreased by potentiometer 176. As the tension of the running glass filaments varies the speed of the winding motor 18 is increased or decreased to keep the tension at a constant value by potentiometer 178. The arm of this latter potentiometer is moved by a pivoting arm carrying a roller over which the glass filament pass (see also Fig. 4, not shown). The two potentiometers control the winding motor current in conjunction with thyratron 244. On breakage of a glass filament during winding a drop wire 108 falls to energize the relay CR2-and open contact CR2-1 thus deenergizing the two motors via relays CR1 and M.
