Abstract
1,163,044. Treatment of acne. STIEFEL LABORATORIES Inc. 6 Feb., 1967 [30 March, 1966], No. 5525/67. Heading A5B. A therapeutic composition for the treatment of acne, which composition is stable in storage without the addition of a stabilizer thereto, comprises a uniform dispersion of crystalline benzoyl peroxide in a water- and organicemollient-containing fluid medium, the organic emollient constituents comprising organic compounds that are inert, nonpolar and non- ionic with respect to the other constituents of the composition and that have a boiling point higher than water, the composition containing from 1 to 25% by weight benzoyl peroxide, from 2 to 25% by weight of organic emollient and from 50 to 90% by weight water. Suitable organic emollients are aliphatic alcohols having 4 to 20 carbon atoms; glycols having from 2 to 3 carbon atoms and polymers of these glycols; fatty acids having 12 to 20 carbon atoms and esters thereof. Specific emollients mentioned are butyl, isobutyl, amyl, isoamyl, hexyl and isohexyl alcohols; ethylene, diethylene, polyethylene and propylene glycols; lauric, . myristic, palmitic and stearic acids; ethly and isopropyl laurate; ethyl, n-propyl and isopropyl myristate; ethyl, isopropyl and methyl palmitate; methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, buytl, isobutyl, amyl and isoamyl stearate; butyl, propyl and isopropyl oleate. Sulphur may be present as an additional active substance. The composition may also contain at least one emulsifier for the aqueous and non- aqueous phases of the fluid medium.
