Abstract

A neutron-absorbent shield consists of or contains one or more boric acid esters of aliphatic alcohols containing 9 carbon atoms or more. The metaboric acid esters of cetylic, myristic, stearic and oleic acids are preferred. In examples, these esters are made by melting the appropriate alcohol in a vessel equipped with a stirring apparatus scraping the bottom, adding finely pulverized boric acid and heating to 150 DEG -160 DEG C. A metaboric acid ester of stearyl alcohols, when cast in the beam catchers of a neutron spectrograph, showed satisfactory shielding properties. The boric esters may be mixed with an organic plastic material which is able to form a solution with the ester. Paraffin wax or other waxes and polyethylene are suitable plastic materials. For example the metaboric acid ester of stearic alcohol and polyethylene are mixed by melting together with stirring and the melt is cast into blocks which are easy to machine by saw and lathe. From these blocks, smaller blocks are sawn out which are suitable for stacking into neutron shielding walls in nuclear reactor partitions.
