Abstract

Polyolefins are stabilized by blending them with a minor proportion of an organo-boron compound consisting of an ester of an oxy-acid of boron, or a boronic acid or ester thereof, or a borinic acid or ester. The organo-boron compounds contain a radical of at least 6 carbon atoms. The polyolefin is preferably made by a low-pressure process using a Ziegler-type catalyst. The blends may also include known stabilizers and anti-oxidants. The polyolefines may be polyethylene or polypropylene. The Specification contains an extensive list of suitable organo-boron compounds of which tristearyl borate, 2, 6- di-tertiary butyl-phenyl din-butylborate, and 2, 6-di-tertiary butyl, 4-methylphenyl din-butyl borate are used in the examples. Other stabilizers mentioned are sodium carbonate, cadmium and calcium stearates, polymeric glycidyl polyethers and tin alkyl esters. Specification 867,027 is referred to.
