Abstract

1,162,978. Quilted laminate. SMITH & NEPHEW PLASTICS Ltd. 15 Dec., 1966 [22 Dec., 1965], No. 54263/65. Heading B5N. A quilted fabric comprises two layers of airpervious material quilted one to each surface of an air pervious pad, at least one of the layers of air-pervious material quilted to the pad being a non-woven net of a thermoplastic material produced by stretching or stressing in two mutually perpendicular directions a thermoplastic sheet material having a regular pattern of embossments on, or cavities in, at least one surface. The pad may comprise a single layer of air-pervious material, a plurality of layers of such material, a random arrangement of chopped pieces, e.g. pieces of the non- woven net, held in position by the quilting lines, or compacted synthetic or natural fibres or threads. The thermoplastic sheet material may comprise an olefin polymer e.g. of ethylene or propylene, or olefin copolymer. When a non- woven net is only present on one side of the pad the other outer layer may be a fabric woven from natural or synthetic fibres. A finishing material, e.g. artificial or natural silk, or cotton, sheets may be glued or stitched to the surface of the quilted fabric. The layers of the quilted fabric may be united by heat sealing, e.g. by high-frequency welding, electrical impulse or resistance welding, or by heated patterned rollers; when the pad is thermoplastic, or by sewing when the pad is not thermoplastic. In one example the non-woven net is quilted by heat to one side of a pad of acrylic fibres and a fabric. of acrylic, e.g. Courtelle (Registered Trade Mark) fibres is quilted by heat to the other side. In another example (Fig. 1, not shown) non-woven nets produced by sequential biaxial stretching of an embossed sheet of highdensity polyethylene are heat sealed to each side of a foamed polyurethane pad. In a further example (Fig. 4, not shown), a non-woven net produced by simultaneous biaxial stressing of a high-density polyethylene sheet is heat sealed to one face, and a fabric woven from polyacrylonitrile fibres heat sealed to the other face of a pad of polyacrylonitrile fibres. The quilted fabrics may be used in garments, packaging, heat insulation, e.g. pipe lagging, electrical insulation, or table mats.
