Abstract

1,162,972. Inductors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 23 Aug., 1966 [24 Aug., 1965], No. 36409/65. Heading H1T. Variable electrical inductor 10 comprises a group 10A of coils spaced apart along an axis and connected in series and a further group of coils 1OB also spaced apart along an axis and electrically connected, the two groups of coils being relatively movable between a position in which the coils of the two groups are interleaved and one in which they are separated. The coils 10B may themselves be connected in series, and the groups of coils 10A and 1O may be connected in series or in parallel. The magneto-motive forces of the two groups may be arranged either to be additive or opposed when they are interleaved, and the coils of at least one of the groups may have ferro-magnetic cores, made up of laminations or of powdered material in a binder. Ferromagnetic limb and yoke members may be located externally of the two groups of coils, and a limb member may be movable with an adjacent group of coils. One group of coils may be movable relative to the other along an arcuate path normal to the axes of the two groups of coils. Voltage dividers made up of two inductors according to the invention, connected together, are described. They may be incorporated in tap-changing devices for transformers or reactors.
