Abstract

1,162,509. Reconstituted tobacco. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. 30 April, 1968 [17 May, 1967], No. 20441/68. Heading A2C. In the manufacture of reconstituted tobacco, in order to reduce the darkening of the tobacco when it is exposed to heat, the tobacco is extracted with water and at least a portion of the polyphenols present in the resulting aqueous solution are chemically neutralized or are removed by precipitation with a chemical agent prior to recombining the aqueous solution with the extracted tobacco. Sodium sulphite may be used as a neutralizing agent, and heavy metal salts, such as lead or barium acetates, may be used as precipitants. In the neutralization method, an aqueous slurry is formed and the neutralizing agent is added direct to the slurry, whereas in the precipitation method the precipitating agent is added to the aqueous extract after its separation from the slurry and the extract is then centrifuged to remove the precipitate before recombining the extract and the extracted tobacco. The treated slurry is cooked under pressure prior to forming into a reconstituted tobacco sheet.
