Abstract
1342400 Nickel, cobalt recovery DEEPSEA VENTURES Inc 26 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 17244/71 Heading C1A Nickel and cobalt ions are separated from a solution by (1) maintaining the solution's pH at from 3 to 5À5, (2) contacting it with a liquid chelating agent, immiscible with water which will extract both nickel and cobalt from the solution, while maintaining the solution's pH within the range 3 to 5À5, (3) separating the extract containing nickel and cobalt values from the aqueous raffinate solution, (4) contacting the extract with an acidic aqueous solution removing selectively nickel values, (5) separating acidic solution and extract and (6) contacting extract with a strongly acidic aqueous solution to strip cobalt from the extract medium. In an example the liquid chelating agent is a petroleum solution of a 8-hydroxy quinoline, a 3-20 wt. per cent. hydrochloric acid selectively strips the nickel, and an acidic solution containing more than twenty per cent by wt. HCl strips the cobalt. The final cobalt-hydrochloric acid solution may be contacted with a triisooctylamine-kerosene solution from which the cobalt may be stripped with a weakly acidic solution. Isodeconol may be present in the 8-hydroxyquinoline and triisooctylamine solutions.
