Abstract
1428705 Separating nickel and cobalt values DEEPSEA VENTURES Inc 25 April 1973 [26 April 1972] 19582/73 Heading C1A Nickel and cobalt values are separated from an aqueous solution of a nickel salt and a cobalt halide by (1) selectively extracting the cobalt with a liquid extracting medium and stripping the cobalt from the liquid extractant using an aqueous acid solution, (2) extracting the nickel by means of a liquid ion exchange extracting medium selective for nickel and stripping the nickel value from ion exchange extractant with an acidic aqueous solution. The preferred liquid extracting media are organic amines, which form a cobalt halide ammine complex and the preferred ion exchange extracting media are α-oximes and hydrocarbon substituted 8-hydroxyquinolones. Manganese may also be present in solution and can be extracted by contact with a phosphoric acid ester after extraction of the major part of the manganese by contact with an aqueous acid solution containing halide ion. The original metal containing solution may be obtained from undersea nodule ore.
