Abstract

1,161,850. Opening containers. NATIONAL CAN CORP. 4 Sept., 1967, No. 40372/67. Heading B8D. An opening 7 in a can end member 2 is closed by a removable tape 11 of metal foil adhered to the member 2, a layer of plastisol 14 being adhered to the underside of the member 2 and to the tape 11 through the opening 7 so that when the tape 11 is removed the plastisol 14 is torn thereby opening a can to which the member 2 may be attached. The tape, which may include a pull tab, is attached by means of an adhesive 13 applied as a coating to both the tape and the member 2; each coating including a thermoplastic vinyl resin and a thermosetting resin and the two coatings being separated by a thermoplastic layer. The plastisol 14 is applied to the underside of the member 2 over a vinyl top coating and a vinyl base coating which is modified by a thermosetting resin. In modifications, the opening may be defined by a line of weakness (29) comprising a slit (31) and a score (33), Figs. 9-12 (not shown); or the slit (31c) may be extended, only one end of the aperture being scored, Figs. 13-14 (not shown); or a pair of tapes (lid, 11d<SP>1</SP>) may be used to cover a pair of holes, respectively, or the pair of holes may be covered by a single tape, Figs. 15-18 (not shown).
