Abstract

1,160,809. Heat-treating metallic workpieces. BALZERS PATENT UND BETEILIGUNGS A.G. Nov.29, 1967 [Dec.20, 1966], No.54274/67. Heading C7N. Metallic workpieces 14 are annealed in vacuo in a furnace 1, then introduced, e.g. downwardly through a communicating valve 10, into an empty quenching chamber, e.g. into a basket 15 inside the inner wall 13 of a vessel 11, into which subsequently the quenching fluid 24 in a storage reservoir is introduced by the application of pressure. The storage reservoir may be the space between the double walls 12 and 13 of the vessel 11, connected to a compressed air pipe 22 and communicating with the inside of the chamber via one or more connecting ducts 16, 17, and 18, opened and closed by valves 19 which may be operated through linkages 21 by hydraulic or pneumatic jacks 20. Alternatively, the reservoir (35, Fig. 2) may be separated from the quenching container (13). The workpieces may be introduced into the chamber by releasing them from a holder 8 e.g. by actuating lever 9 to let them drop.
