Abstract

1335254 Gas storage systems R W MCJONES 5 May 1971 [6 May 1970] 13365/71 Heading F4P A process for charging a predetermined quantity of gas into a container 78 containing less than said predetermined quantity regardless of container temperature comprises the steps of (a) sensing the pressure differential between the container 78 and a predetermined quantity of reference gas contained in a reference vessel 132 and having substantially the same temperature and pressure characteristics as the gas to be charged into the container 78; (b) in response to the pressure differential charging the gas into the container 78 under a condition where the reference vessel 132 is in thermal communication with container 78 so that the reference gas temperature is substantially the same as the container gas temperature; and (c) terminating charging of the gas into container 78 when a predetermined pressure differential is reached. As shown, the vessel 132 is a bellows located in a body 128 suspended from a valve housing 80 via a tube 86, a spring-biased valve member 96 being located in housing 80 into which a passage 104 leads from a gas source. Located in the passage 84 connecting housings 80 and 128 is a rod 120 which contacts bellows plate 140 and valve member 96. Thus, in operation, the pressure differential between the container 78, which communicates with the exterior of bellows 132 via parts 126 and passage 84, the interior of bellows 132 determines the position of plate 140 and rod 120. If the pressure inside bellows 132 is greater than that of container 78, the plate 140 and rod 120 push the valve 96 away from its seat and charging from passage 104 to container 78 takes place. When the pressure in container 78 reaches a predetermined value relative to bellows 132 the plate 140 and rod 120 have been lowered sufficiently to permit the valve member 96 to close against its seat thus terminating charging. If gas is drawn via line 114 from container 78, the bellows plate will again rise to open, via rod 120, valve member 96. The reference gas can alternatively be stored in a closed chamber having a piston defining one of the chamber walls and connected by rod 120 to valve member 96 (Fig. 3, not shown). In a further embodiment, a free piston slidably received in a cylinder connected to a reference vessel, which vessel is outside the container but in thermal communication therewith, acts as both a differential pressure sensing means and valve means (Fig. 4, not shown).
