A piston ring for a two-stroke engine has, in its unstressed condition, an ovality such that the difference between its maximum and minimum outer diameters is in the range 0À0005 to 0À004 of the maximum diameter, the ratio of the mean outside diameter of the ring to its wall thickness being 22 Œ 1. The piston ring gap is preferably 7% to 9% of the mean outside diameter.
