Abstract
An oil scraper piston ring 1 is made from a metal band which is first folded along a line of apertures 12 and then formed into a ring with its edges 21, 22 situated towards the outside, the ring being expanded by an expansion ring 25 and arranged to bear against a side face of a piston groove 2. The ring may be segmented. Only one of the edges 21, 22 may be arranged to engage with the cylinder wall 4. Oil scraped off the wall passes through the apertures 12 and oil return holes 7 in the piston. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates the use of two rings side by side. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) illustrate a ring of W form if desired, the central point 41 may be reduced in thickness. Figs. 6 to 10 (not shown) illustrate rings formed from bands having slotted apertures and the use of an expansion spring of bent wire 48 (Fig. 6).
