An axially-acting expander adapted to cooperate with at least one thin flat piston ring 6, is of sinuous outline and has areas 4, Fig. 1, engaging the ring 6 and separated by gaps 5, the sinuous outline being formed by bending the expander around radial lines and the ratio between the arc length corresponding to the boaring areas and the arc length of the gaps being greater than one. As shown in Figs. 5 and 27, the expander, which may be made of steel strip or wire, cast iron, copper, brass or an elastic material, is arranged to act on several rings 6. disposed in a groove 9 of a piston 10, a radially-acting expander 7 also being provided. As shown in Figs. 9 and 13, the expander may be made of a number of separate parts 21 and assembled on the rings 6 by various types of hook arrangements 22 and 25. If desired, the gaps may be closed as shown in Fig. 23. Collapse of the expander is restrained by the provision of enlarged loops 33, 34 or by projections 36, Fig. 25, which are arranged to engage the loops 3 or a ring 6. The expander may be provided with apertures, preferably on its base, so as to facilitate flow of oil into the piston groove. The rings 6, in their unstressed condition, may be frusto-conical and have concave or convex faces; furthermore, the edges may be straight or rounded off or, alternatively, provided with serrations to facilitate flow of oil during the running-in period of the piston.
