Abstract

981,862. Pistons. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. Jan. 21, 1964, No. 2580/64. Heading F2T. A piston-and-ring assembly comprises a split oil scraper ring 3 which is mounted in a groove 6 in the piston 1 and has a channel 5 in its lower end face 4, the piston wall being recessed immediately below the groove 6 with the base 9 of the recess inclined to the piston axis and the deepest part 12 of the recess nearest the face 4. The bases 9 are curved and may extend between adjacent rings, as shown in Fig. 1. The rings may be annular as shown or of helical form housed in helical grooves. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), bearer rings are disposed between plain rings and oil scraper rings according to the invention.
