Abstract
1,043,324. Pistons. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. Aug. 25, 1965. [Dec 3, 1964], No. 49164/64. Heading F2T. A piston-and-ring assembly comprises a sealing and bearing ring 3 of triangular crosssection housed in a V-section groove in the piston 1 and pressed axially against one side 6 of the groove by a split axially resilient pressure ring 4 located between the ring 3 and the other side 5 of the groove. The rings 3 and 4 are of springy steel and the ring 4 in its free state is of conical form, Fig. 2 (not shown), and may be divided into two or more arcuate portions. The piston may be recessed as at 12 to collect oil removed from the cylinder wall by the ring 3. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the ring 4 is disposed between the ring 3 and the side 6 of the groove. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), two sealing rings 3 of rightangular triangular section are mounted in a groove, back-to-back, with a pressure ring 4 between them.
