Abstract
1,159,965. Riveting. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 20 Oct., 1966 [20 Sept., 1965], No. 40086/65. Heading B3U. [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] A low-impedance connection between two terminal blocks 11, which are connected to main copper electrodes 1, 2 by way of copper bars 12, is established by forcing a rivet 15 of aluminium or copper through aligned apertures 13, 14 in expendable copper electrodes 3, 4, bolted to the main electrodes 1, 2 and deforming the ends of the rivet over the expendable electrodes so as to grip them tightly; during the riveting action the rivet 15 punctures an insulating sheet 10 of polythene which is disposed between the two sets of terminal block, electrodes, &c. Operation of a trigger circuit 26 renders a spark-gap 25 conductive, so causing a charged capacitor 24 to discharge through a solenoid 23; the consequent rise of magnetic flux induces in the adjacent alloy body 18 of a hammer 17 a current of such sense that the hammer 17 is repelled upwards. A steel protrusion 16 on hammer 17, and an aligned steel insert 21 in electrode 1, co-operate to expand the ends of the rivet 15. To break the connection, the riveted electrodes 3, 4 are removed; this, and the subsequent replacement of parts, may be effected automatically. The device may be used in parallel with the arrangement disclosed in Specification 1,094,192, which has a shorter connection time.
