Abstract

1442460 Electromagnetic switches WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 6 Aug 1973 [18 Aug 1972] 37168/73 Heading HIN A current limiting device for a circuit breaker (Fig. 4, not shown) comprises a pile of discs 12 which, under normal current conditions, are compressed between copper plates 16, 24 by a spring 28 acting on the shaft of a plunger 34 of a solenoid 38 in series with the discs. Upon excess current flowing through the discs 12 and coil 44 of the solenoid 38, plunger 34 is pulled into contact with member 40 thus removing the compression force of the spring from the discs which then separate from each other so that arcing occurs and the resistance of the device abruptly increases. The discs may comprise silver and graphite, copper and graphite, or graphite electrodes in an oil or water bath.
