Abstract
1,159,889. Folding edges of non-metallic sheet material. CARL SCHMALE, [trading as CARL SCHMALE]. 8 Dec., 1967 [29 Dec., 1966; 9 Sept., 1967], No. 55918/67. Heading B5K. [Also in Division D1] An edge of sheet material is first folded singly and is then folded again before passing to apparatus at which seaming is effected by sewing, heating or adhesive, each folding being continuously pressed flat over the whole width. In Fig. 1, upper rollers 2a, 2b, 2c are journalled in pivoted arms 6 and are biased by adjustable spring means 7, contained in fixed housings 8, against respective fixed rollers 2d, 2e, 2f which engage the upper rollers through slots formed in a work-supporting plate 25. All the rollers are interconnected by gearing driven by a variable-speed gear arrangement. The upper rollers are interconnected by an endless belt 12 which passes over a tensioning roller 13 disposed beyond the seaming point, the lower run of belt 12 being supported by plate 25. A pair of rollers 17 is biased against belt 12 between the rollers 2b, 2c by spring means 23 in a fixed housing 22. An edge of the material, after being pressed between rollers 2c, 2f is folded upon itself by a scroll guide (27), the folded edge then being pressed under rollers 17 and between rollers 2b, 2e. A loop cut from tape 36, drawn from a reel 35, is then laid on the edge and the folded portion is then folded over the loop by a scroll guide 28. The finally folded edge is pressed between the rollers 2a, 2d and is then directed by a guide 29 to the needle 16 of a sewing machine 14. Projections from the guides (27), 28 are located in peripheral grooves formed in the rollers 2b, 2a respectively. In a modification, Fig. 7, the edge is turned up by a scroll guide 41, and is then turned over upon a flange 43 projecting from the lower end of a guide plate 42, by the lower surface of a rotary disc 44 having an axial projection 45 also acting as a guide surface.
