Abstract

1289325 Folding edges of non-metallic sheet material J H FENNER & CO Ltd 26 June 1970 [27 June 1969] 32495/69 Heading B5K [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for forming a fold in a length of sheet material comprises a horizontal support 20, a horizontal cord 12 arranged above and beyond the edge of the support and means 22, 24 for downwardly deforming the cord 20 that at least a portion thereof lies below the surface and the portion of the sheet, to be folded overhanging the edge of the support and means 49, 16 for tensioning the cord against the action of the deforming means to straighten the cord and thereby raise the portion of the sheet forming a fold therein about the cord. A second cord 30 has a spring urged roller (not shown) between the rollers 34 and 36, movement of which allows a welding machine 10 to remain stationary while the cord is straightened. When the cord 12 is straight the roller 18, mounted on the machine 10, moves between the folded parts of the sheet and the end of the sheet is sewn by the machine 10. To hold the edge of the sheet to be sewn there is provided a guide plate 84 and the fold is held between the two guides 80. To fold in the lower edge of the folded portion before seaming there is provided a folding blade 86 bent so that one arm 86a lies on one side of the blade 84 and a second arm 86b lies on the other side. In operation the folded portion is carried under the blade 84 by the blade 86a and is turned upwardly by the blade 86b on the opposite side of blade 84.
