Abstract

In a capacitative electrical component comprising electrode material and dielectric strips wound into a roll, at least one end face is metallized so as to provide a pair of concentric terminals one connected to one end of one of the electrodes, and the other to the other end of the same electrode so that it has appreciable resistance and/or inductance in the case of an artificial transmission line, or to the other end of the other electrode to minimize resistance and inductance in the case of a capacitor. One electrode of an artificial transmission line may comprise dielectric strip 1 bearing the metallized pattern shown in Fig. 1, and insulating tape 3 is placed over and under unmetallized gap GH, the length of the tape being greater than a turn of the roll, so that when the assembly is wound, the metallized areas on the end face connected to each end of the electrode are insulated from each other (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). The other electrode may be a metallized area on the opposite side with an unmetallized margin AD, in which case a second plain dielectric strip is also employed, or the metallizing may be on the second strip. For a balanced transmission line, having a pair of concentric terminals at both ends, the other electrode may comprise a second dielectric strip bearing the metallized pattern of the first reversed (Fig. 4, not shown). Masking tape 3 may comprise a single strip extending over more than two turns. Fig. 5 illustrates the patterns of metallizing on two dielectric strips and one position of masking tape to provide a capacitor which may have concentric terminals at either or both ends. Series resistance between XY and WZ and the corresponding length of the other electrode may be tolerated or shorted out by external connections.
