Abstract

1,158,788. Actuation of switches. E.M.P. ELECTRIC Ltd. 30 Jan., 1967 [28 Oct., 1965], No. 45665/65. Heading H1N. In a spring actuating mechanism for a circuit breaker, an opening spring 24 and a closing spring 19 are charged successively by successive movements of an operating member 34. The operating lever 34, which may be moved manually, pneumatically, or by electric motor, drives a disc 14 through a pawl 35 engaging projections 37 the pawl being positioned by a fixed cam 36. The disc 14 is first rotated anticlockwise drawing a tension rod 22 to the right to rotate a crank 18; this compresses the spring 24 against a fixed pivot 25 and straightens a toggle 29, 31 which is then latched. The disc 14 is then rotated clockwise compressing the spring 19 against the crank 18 now held by the toggle. This brings disc 14 back to the position shown; a slight further movement moves spring pivot 13 overcentre and either immediately or after releasing a closing latch the spring drives the disc 14 and, through a Geneva-type mechanism 13, 11, a second disc 10 to close contacts (not shown). Subsequent release of the toggle 29, 31 permits spring 24 to open the contacts. The spring 24 may be a two stage arrangement so that the opening motion is slowed towards the end or a dashpot may be provided. The toggle 29, 31 may be released by a solenoid.
