Abstract

1418640 Automatic circuit-breakers; high voltage switches YORKSHIRE SWITCHGEAR & ENG CO Ltd 14 March 1973 [16 March 1972] 12484/72 Heading H1N A circuit-breaker has a closing spring system with one or more springs 27 restrained by first and second independently movable restraining means 26, 24, the second 24, being connected to move the movable contacts and the first, 26, being moved independently of the contacts to charge the closing spring system, and an opening spring system with one or more springs 39 restrained by third and fourth restraining means 36, 38a, the third, 36, being connected to the moving contacts and at least one, e.g. the third as shown, of these restraining means being movable to charge the opening spring system without this movement being transmitted through the closing spring system. The circuit-breaker also includes first and second latch means for releasing the second and third restraining means to permit closing and opening of the circuit-breaker by the respective spring system. As shown, the first latch is a toggle 40, 42 which is moved from an over-centre latching position to release a bell crank 19 for movement of the contact-carrying member 13 by the closing spring system into the closed position, Fig. 2. The circuit-breaker is tripped by operating the second latch lever 48 to release a bell-crank lever 34 from a roller 47 on the lever 48. The opening spring system turns the lever 34, which abuts a pin on the lever 19, so that the lever 19 is turned anticlockwise to open the contacts. At the same time a link (not shown) connected between the lever 34 and a lever 29 moves the first restraining means 26 so that the closing spring system is not stressed during the opening operation. Both spring systems may now be recharged by manually moving a lever or by energizing a motor or solenoid to turn a shaft 21 to turn the lever 34 anticlockwise, to move the first means 26 to the left to recharge the closing spring system, to move the third means 36 to the right to recharge the opening spring system, and to effect relatching of the lever 34 by the roller 47. The general arrangement of the circuit-breaker may be that of Specification 1,418,639 and form part of the switchgear of Specification 1,418,638.
