Abstract
1277722 Snap action mechanisms; high voltage switches S & C ELECTRIC CO 19 May 1970 [1 Aug 1969] 24277/70 Heading H1N A snap-acting operating mechanism for an electric switch comprises two levers 83, 115 and a flat spiral spring 90 all arranged coaxially. The first lever 83 is latched in one or the other end position by respective latches 62, 72 while the second lever 115 has cam surfaces 106, 107 for releasing the latches. The inner and outer' ends of the spring 90 are connected respectively to an arbor 98 and an anchor 93 both also pivoted about the axis. The arbor 98 has a downturned portion 101 engaging in identical slots 80 in the two levers while the latter has respective upturned portions 84, 116 which co-operate with the outer end 92 or the anchor 93. The spring 90 is prestressed so that portion 101 is held in engagement with the end 82 of the slot 80 in the first lever 83 and the outer end 89 of the spring in engagement with portion 84. The second lever is retained in its end positions by detents 122, 123. The first lever 83 is coupled by an arm 30 to the switch (Figs. 1-3, not shown) which may be part of a high-voltage switchgear and as described has three pivoted blades moving in arc chutes. The second lever 115 can be driven manually by a hexagon wrench attached at 38. When the lever 115 is driven anticlockwise (Fig. 5) to open the switch the upstanding portion 116 engages the spring anchor 93 to wind the spring from its outer end; at the end of this movement cam 106 releases latch 62 and the first lever 83 is rotated rapidly anticlockwise by spring arbor 101 acting on the end 82 of slot 80. The lever 80 is arrested by a buffer 87. When the lever 115 is subsequently moved clockwise to close the switch the end 80 of the slot 80 in lever 115 engages portion 101 to wind the spring from its inner end until cam 107 releases latch 72 and lever 83 is driven clockwise by spring anchor 93.
