Abstract

1,157,972. Making electrodes for electroerosion; casting-machines. A.G. FUR INDUSTRIELLE ELEKTRONIK, AGIE LOSONE BEI LOCARNO. 9 Sept., 1966 [23 May, 1966], No. 40502/66. Addition to 1,124,074. Headings B3A, B3F and B3V. In the manufacture of an electrode for electro-erosion according to the parent Specification, the carrier metal alloy 1 is cast on to a preheated pattern 2 in a sealed container 12. The alloy 1 is heated electrically in a melting container 10 under thermostatic control and upon withdrawal of a slide bar 30 will discharge directly into a pre-heated mould 13, 14 containing the pattern 2 embedded in a mass 26. The container 12 may be connected through valve 28 to a vacuum pump, such as a water jet pump, and through pipe 20 to a source of protective gas which may be carbon dioxide or nitrogen. Mass 26 may be a water-soluble salt or salt mixture with a synthetic resin binder; after casting and cooling, preferably by water, the salt is dissolved out in cold or warm water and the friable residue is then crumbled away. Alternatively the binder may be rubber, polystyrene, polyacrylate, polyvinyl chloride or an acid-soluble cement; subsequently the binder is dissolved. The pattern 2 is later separated from the alloy 1 and a metal layer is deposited on the contoured surface thereof as described in the parent Specification. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the melting container (10) with a closed lid is disposed above the container (12). The melting may take place in air, in a protective atmosphere or under vacuum. A valved pipe (21) connects the two containers. In a further embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), an open melting container (10) is disposed below the container (12) and heating is effected by an electric winding, a steam jacket and a flame. The molten metal is drawn into the casting container (12) under vacuum.
