In a method of casting metal, the metal is poured into a mould, the interior of which has been lined with a material containing releasable fluorine and/or chlorine by expanding a bag 12 by gas pressure into contact with the inside of the mould. The gas is an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon. The material of the bag is a material such as polytetrafluoroethylene, or fluorohalocarbon which will release fluorine and/or chlorine under heat.
