Abstract
1,156,221. Asbestos treatment. FMC CORP. 25 May, 1966 [13 Aug., 1965], No. 23324/66. Heading C1A. [Also in Division D2] Asbestos is opened by mechanical treatment in the presence of dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) to produce fibrils of diameter from 200A to 1Á, then washed free of DMSO. The DMSO may be undiluted or mixed with water. The asbestos may be treated before or during DMSO treatment with a dilute acid to increase the SiO 2 lMgO wt. ratio by 5-30%. Thus, the asbestos may be slurried with DMSO and HC1, then mechanically treated by stirring at 100-200 r.p.m. optionally followed by treatment in a disintegrator. The DMSO is recovered and reused. Temperatures of up to 100 C. may be used. The asbestos may be initially opened by dry-grinding.
