Abstract

1,130,866. α - Methyl - phenylalanine derivatives. MERCK & CO. Inc. 19 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965], No. 46804/66. Heading C2C. Phenylalanines of general formula in which n is 0 or 1, are prepared by hydrolysing a cyano-ester of formula wherein each of R 1 and R 2 is H or C 1-5 alkyl and R 3 is C 1-5 alkyl, to produce an amidoester of formula which is subjected to the Hofmann degradation producing intermediates of either of the formulµ which are then hydrolysed. If optically active starting materials are used, optically active products are formed.
