Abstract

1,212,846. Preparing amino-anthraquinone compounds. CIBA Ltd. 19 Feb., 1969 [20 Feb., 1968], No. 8931/69. Heading C4P. 1 - Aminoanthraquinone - 2 - sulphonic acid or a -2-sulphohalide is reacted with an aldehyde to protect the 1-amino group, nitrated and then treated with a dilute inorganic acid or alkali solution to free the 1-amino group and form 1 - amino - 4 - nitro - anthraquinone - 2 - sulphonic acid. The product may be reduced to the 1,4-diamino compound and then reacted with a cyanide to form 1,4-diamino-anthraquinone-2,3- dinitrile. The process may be carried out without isolation of the intermediate products and in a modification the crude mixture obtained by sulphonation of 1-amino -anthraquinone which contains free 2-sulphonic acid and/or 2-sulphochloride may be used as starting material.
