In an ironing machine comprising a roll 1 and pivoted shoe 3 the shoe is lifted by rotating crank arm 5 fixed to flexible coupling 6, attached to one end of pivoted arm 4. A motor when driven in one direction rotates the roll, and when driven in the other rotates the arm 5 to lift the shoe. The motor is cut by switch 10 when the arm passes dead centre. On re-commencement of rotation of roll 1 the arm is rotated to apply the shoe.
