826,552. Load handling machines; fluid pressure apparatus. BRADBURY & SONS Ltd., J. Feb. 23, 1956 [Nov. 24, 1954], No. 5632/56. Classes 78 (2) and 78 (3). In a lifting device comprising a carriage 2 provided with a fork (not shown) which is raised on a column 1 by an hydraulic ram and cylinder 5, 15 fluid being supplied to the cylinder by an electrically driven pump 12, means are provided to open a lowering valve 16 automatically if a switch 17 controlling the motor fails to stop the carriage at the upper limit of its travel. A pump driving motor 13 is started by rotating a shaft 20 by a cord 29 in a clockwise direction, Fig. 3, causing a lever 21 to rock a lever 23, pivoted across start and stop buttons 26, 25 of the switch 17, to depress button 26. On pulling a cord 30 the shaft 20 is rotated in the opposite direction to depress the stop button 25. On pulling cord 30 further, arm 21 moves through the provision of a resilient coupling 22, and a lever 27 on shaft 20 depresses a rod 28 to open a lowering valve 16. On approaching its upper limit of travel, a projection 31 on the carriage engages a lever 32 which engages a lever 35 on shaft 20 to rotate the shaft to depress the stop button 25, and, if the switch fails to open, further rotation of lever 32 rotates the shaft to open the lowering valve 16.
