Abstract

1,074,716. Sewing machines. SINGER CO. Oct. 5, 1965 [Oct. 7, 1964], No. 42203/65. Heading D1G. [Also in Division H2] A sewing machine is provided with mechanism for counter-rotating the upper arm shaft to a predetermined position when the machine is stopped. The upper shaft is driven from an intermediate driven shaft 36 by means of a belt 41 engaging a pulley fixed thereon. The shaft 36 carries a centrifugal switch 50 (see Division H2) which actuates the mechanism when the shaft is almost at rest. A flange 73 keyed to a shaft 34 journalled in shaft 36 may be oscillated by means of a rack 91 engaging a pinion 90 on the flange hub 71. A plunger 75 (see also Fig. 3) in the flange is biased radially inwards by a spring and engages an abutment 44 on the shaft 36. The flange is normally at rest with the plunger held outwards and clear of the abutment by stationary cam means. When the primary drive has been disconnected and the shaft 36 is almost at rest switch 50 actuates a pneumatic piston to push the rack and rotate the flange one revolution. The plunger springs to its inward posittion, entrains the abutment 44 whatever its angular position and rotates shaft 36 and the connected upper arm shaft to its predetermined position. At the end of the piston stroke a switch is operated to withdraw the piston which rotates the flange and plunger to its rest position.
