A tufting machine having a plurality of rows of hollows needles, each of which has a bevelled end to form a protruding edge on one side of the needle to penetrate a backing sheet, said one side of each needle facing opposite to the direction of movement of the backing sheet, is provided with a needle plate comprising a unitary planar member having an outer end extending across and facing in the direction of movement of the backing sheet, the plate having one row of channels to receive each of said rows of needles, each of said channels opening into said outer end and terminating in a rear wall closely adjacent said one side of the needle received therein, and each channel having at least one side wall closely adjacent to the needle received therein. As shown, two rows of staggered tubular needles 11 co-operate with a flat plate 10 supporting backing sheet 14. Plate 10 is formed in its front edge 19 with semi-circular needle-passing recesses 17a, and inwardly of edge 19 with a row of substantially circular needle-passing apertures 17b opening into edge 19 via respective passages 20. The under surface of the plate is flared at the recesses 17a and apertures 17b. In a modification each passage is widened, whereby one edge extends tangentially from an aperture 17b to meet a recess 17a, and the latter extends tangentially to edge 19. In a further modification, a passage edge extends from an outer recess tangentially to one side of an intermediate aperture, and from the other side of the latter tangentially to an innermost aperture.
