Abstract

1,155,724. Process for detergent laundry bars. COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO. 28 June, 1966 [2 July, 1965; 26 Nov., 1965; 21 Feb.. 1966 (2)], No. 28957/66. Heading C5D. A process for the manufacture of a coherent, solid, built detergent composition containing a minor proportion of a synthetic water soluble, anionic detergent and a proportion of a water soluble, solid builder salt in excess of the amount of the detergent, and water in an amount sufficient to plasticize the composition, which comprises continuously intensively shearing the constituent materials together while advancing the same through a shearing zone to form an intricate plastic blend which is continuously discharged from the shearing zone. The detergent may be supplied to the shearing zone in already neutralized form or as a liquid detergent acid and an alkaline neutralizing agent, in which the alkaline neutralizing agent is brought into contact with the builder salt before contact with the acid, the first two being either in the form of a solution, or as a solid with a separate stream of water. Specified builder salts are alkali metal polyphosphates, silicates, borates, carbonates and bicarbonates, in the case of the last two the neutralizing agent is such that the detergent acid reacts with it preferentially. Any conventional synthetic anionic detergent may be used, many of which are specified. The residence time in the shearing zone is desirably less than ten minutes and the blend is continuously extruded in a heated plastic condition in the form of shapes which are surface hardened by cooling and thereafter compacted and extruded in the form of a bar. Suitable apparatus for the process is given in Specification 1,155,725.
