Abstract
1,155,707. Capping bottles &c. THOMAS HUNTER Ltd. 1 July, 1966 [15 Oct., 1965], No. 43750/65. Heading B8T. The throat 7 of a die for applying a cap 3 to, for example, a glass jar tapers over its lower portion 8, and is made of a tough resilient plastics material such as nylon or polytetrafluorethylene. A spring-loaded plate 1, mounted centrally within the throat 7, holds the cap 3 on to the neck 4 of the jar on initial descent of the die relative to the jar, and on further descent the skirt of the cap is pressed into conformity with the outer shape of the neck 4. The neck 4 may carry a screw-thread 10, in which case the resilience of the throat 7 allows a bead 9 on the cap skirt to remain uncrushed as the cap 3 is pressed down over the neck 4. Thus in the final form of the cap 3 the only parts of the bead 9 which are crushed are the parts actually lying against the projecting regions of the thread 10. A multi-start threaded jar may be closed in this way. Alternatively the jar may have a single outward flange around its mouth. The inner surface of the lower portion 8 of the throat 7 may be smooth, or may be provided with serrations (11), Fig. 2 (not shown), to form a serrated edge to the cap.
